To set a longline you need a linelock device. The simplest way is an aluminium ring with a carabiner to lock the webbing around itself.
There are also professional devices called weblocks, with banana shape, that locks the longline with fixed and mobile pins.
A well-designed weblocker retain over 90% of longline breaking strenght. In case you would use, instead of a weblock, a simple webbing knot, the webbing breacking strenght would drop 50% off.
